Top Maintenance Tips that Incorporate Pool Safety

You need to maintain your pool to keep it clean and safe for your family. But many of the chemicals and tools you need to maintain your pool can actually pose a danger to your safety. It’s important that you understand the risks and the steps you need to take to use these chemicals and tools safely.

Take a look at some of the chemicals and tools you’ll need to use that can pose a threat and what you can do to use them safely:

Chlorine is a standard pool maintenance chemical. It disinfects your pool, helping to kill germs and get rid of dirt and algae. You need to regularly treat your pool with chlorine so that it stays clean, and no bacteria develop that can make your family sick. However, chlorine is also a very powerful chemical, and it can harm anyone who breathes it in or gets it in their eyes or throat.

Once chlorine is diluted in your pool’s water, it is safe. However, whenever you are handling it, you need to be sure to wear gloves, safety glasses, and a mask over your nose and mouth. When you store the chlorine, you need to keep it in a well-ventilated area and far from a heat source.

Muriatic Acid

Just like chlorine, muriatic acid is a strong chemical that can injury your skin or cause serious health issues if you breathe it in. It can also corrode items it comes in contact with, and it can become explosive if it’s mixed with certain chemicals.

You must always wear safety gloves, goggles, and a breathing mask when working with muriatic acid, and you must always store it and work with it in a well-ventilated area. There really shouldn’t be a need to mix muriatic acid with any other chemicals. If you do want to mix, just make sure you read the label very carefully.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is used to improve filtration in your pool. It is a safer product than many of the other chemicals that you will use on your pool, but you still need to use caution when you are handling it. Breathing in too much diatomaceous earth can cause serious lung problems over time. Always wear a mask over your mouth and nose when handling this chemical. You may not notice any problems when handling the chemical once, but long-term exposure can lead to long-term problems. Practice safety and wear a mask.

Vacuum Ports

You need the vacuum ports to connect to your pool vacuum, which can suck up dirt, leaves, bacteria, and other debris to keep your pool clean. Yet swimmers can become trapped by these ports, or they can cut themselves on the ports. You can easily reduce this risk by adding a safety cover to each of the ports. The cover threads right onto the port, and it can be opened to use the ports when needed.

Main Drain Suction

If anyone stands next to or lies on top of the main drain suction, they can get stuck in it. That can be catastrophic if they are underwater when this happens and they are not able to get to the surface for air. Adding a drain cover can prevent this from happening.

When you get your pool inspected or maintained, your pool cleaner should let you know if you have an outdated cover that will present a safety issue. Your cleaner can help you choose an appropriate cover to keep everyone safe without getting in the way of the drain unit’s functionality.

You will likely have an outlet somewhere near your pool for the pump and other accessories that keep your pool clean and the chemicals properly balanced. The wrong outlets can increase your chances of being electrocuted. You need to have GFCI outlets, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets, around your pool. These outlets are designed to shut down whenever water gets on them.

You should also have a grounding wire around above-ground pools to divert an electric arc if one occurs.

Strong chemicals and machinery are needed to keep your pool clean and safe for your family, but you must handle these items properly to reduce your risk.
